31 October, 2026 19:30 - Memento Mori: Early music of darkness and light. A concert by Ensemble Tramontana
Venue: Blackheath Quaker Meeting House, Lawn Terrace, London SE3 9LL
In this season when the veil between worlds thins, we glimpse both sides of it through 13th- to 17th-century music. Cheerful and sombre dances form the skeleton of the programme, including a rare Danse Macabre. Fleshing these pieces out are lighthearted chansons, dark ballads, and polyphonic madrigals and motets about activities of life, strange intermediary beings, and some very serious reflections on death and what might follow.
Expect voices, recorders of many sizes, viols, a touch of hurdy-gurdy, and that curious creature the crumhorn! Enjoy yourself while you can, since Death may arrive at any time…
Starting after dark at 7:30. Interval to include light refreshments.
Timea Gazdag – soprano
Shirley Vaughan – soprano, recorder, crumhorn
Paul Gregory – recorder, crumhorn
Matthew Male – recorder, crumhorn
Amanda Seaborn – recorder, crumhorn, viol
Eszter Komáromi – viol
Esha Neogy – viol
Talia Hunter – hurdy-gurdy
