Some information from Stephen:
'I built three Renaissance viols in the 70’s when I was working in London - Pottery Lane, Notting Hill to be exact- next to the Early Music Centre that Tony Rooley set up.
They were based on an instrument by Hainrich Ebert from Venice, which, at the time, was in the workshop of Charles Beare. It was to have been restored for the instrument museum in Brussels.
The tops of the viols rather than being carved to shape from a thick block of spruce, were of 3 mm. or so, sheets glued to two transverse bars. More in the manner of lute construction than bowed instrument practice.

Thinking back, I seem to remember that the Ebert had a replacement carved top, so I must have followed the top system on some drawings that I did of viols by Ciciliano and Linarol which did retain their original tops.'
